Located 260m above sea level, the old village offers a grandiose panorama over Cannes and the Isles of Lérins, Mandelieu, Grasse and the pre-Alps. It coils like a snail shell with its narrow streets and displays a strict geometric pattern imposed by the fortifications. The architecture of the monuments and the layout of the town reflect ancestral ways of life. Like all the villages, Mougins was enclosed in ramparts with a parapet walk, remains of which can still be seen along with one of the village gates, “Porte Sarrazine.” The village and its monuments are carefully tended, since conservation of the cultural heritage helps preserve its identity. To this end, a major restoration programme was launched. The entire village is decorated with flowers and trees. In 2011, the town of Mougins was granted the “Ville & Métiers d'Art” label for Gastronomy - a first in France!

This Mediterranean hilltop village with its spiral layout inherited from the Middle Ages stands 260m above sea level, overlooking the Bay of Cannes, the Isles of Lérins and the hinterland of Grasse. Bathed in soft blue light, it attracted such prestigious artists as Picasso, Picabia, Paul Éluard, Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, Edith Piaf, Fernand Léger and many more who left their mark, with over 30 art studios and galleries to be discovered in the narrow streets. It has many attractions: a Museum of Classical Art recently opened to display an absolutely unique private collection; an exceptional collection of photographs of the greatest masters of the “Eighth Art”; 60% of listed wooded areas; a worldwide reputation for attracting stars; prestige establishments; quaint stopovers, over 40 restaurants featuring the most refined and most surprising far It is also renowned as a destination for golf with two prestige golf courses and a quality of life to be discovered...

Mougins enjoys a privileged location.

Just 15 minutes from Cannes, its beaches and Festivals; 8km from Grasse, the Capital of Perfume; and 40km from the closest winter resort, Gréolières-les-Neiges, Mougins on its hilltop is like a citadel, overlooking towns and villages all the way to the foot of the pre-Alps.

Despite the rapid increase of its population - from 8,000 inhabitants in 1977 to 20,000 today, the municipality maintains and reinforces its policy of strict control of urban development with an absolute preference for private homes.

Siagne Canal

The Siagne Canal is an integral part of the uplands around Grasse. It has deeply affected the lives of the local people who are profoundly attached to this body of water which contributes to the Provençal cultural identity.

It offers a site of great beauty in terms of its architectue and landscapes, absolutely unique in the Alpes-Maritimes département. With its farming terraces (restanques, faïsses), it offers visitors the sight of Provence as it is in the area around Grasse.

This is a place for living and recharging one's batteries for all those who walk along its banks from one end to the other. It is a haven of peace which has become indispensable in a world which has lost many of its reference points.

Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church

(11th c)

Notre-Dame-de-Vie chapel.

This 12th-century chapel once known as Notre-Dame-de-Villevieille, enjoyed great renown beyond the borders of the Kingdom. With its porch, rustic church tower and splendid cypress trees, it fits in harmoniously with a gentle landscape of incomparable serenity.

Saint-Barthélemy chapel.

Interesting historic building, octagonal in shape (rare for religious structures in this region), with a semi-circular apse, porch at its entrance and little bellcote on the chevet. Its layout may be a survival of the martyria of the early Christian church.

MUSEE D'ART CLASSIQUE DE MOUGINS  - MOUGINS

The Museum offers visitors a chance to discover several works by Picasso, who lived in Mougins and painted there for the last 12 years of his life; inspired by his love of classical art in the Museum’s permanent collection in the old village.

Their presence at the MACM provides the ideal counterpart for the superb Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities displayed on the four levels of the Museum.

The same echo can be found in the work of other artists having lived in and around Mougins, like Francis Picabia, Jean Cocteau, Arman, Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy and Marc Chagall.

These works are enriched by the splendid Roman portraits painted by Peter Paul Rubens, and the Classical themes of Antoine Caron, Alessandro Turchi and Frederik van Valckenborch.

Even contemporary artists like Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley and Marc Quinn fit in perfectly with this juxtaposition of old and modern works which makes for the MACM’s original concept.

MUSEE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE ANDRE VILLERS  - MOUGINS

The museum displays portraits of the master by the well-known photographers of the time.

MUSEE D'HISTOIRE LOCALE  - MOUGINS

Local history museum with exhibition rooms.

MUSEE MAURICE GOTTLOB  - MOUGINS

The curious destiny of Maurice Gottlob. From the studios of Rodin to his rural getaway, he has never renounced his love for art. Thanks to his bucolic painting, you can rediscover the soul of the Mougins of yesteryear.

L'ETANG DE FONTMERLE  - MOUGINS

This 5-hectare pond on the edge of La Valmasque Park is a remarkable site not only for the beauty of its landscapes but also for its amazing vegetation and many bird species. The pond was in peril...

In 1992, Fontmerle pond was dying, invaded by phragmites, the common reed. The water surface was reduced to 3%. Rehabilitation works led to restoring almost half the 5 hectares. Phragmites still cover a large area where birds nest. Now, the lotuses still bloom and birds can thrive and reproduce. In the future, it will be important to maintain the right balance between water, phragmites and lotus to protect the ecosystem. Obviously, hunting and fishing are banned. Observation points and a bridge were built to help visitors see, hear and discover the wonderful world of this pond.
