“Giacometti & Maeght 1946-1966”, will bring together the artist’s best known masterpieces, including the bronzes: l’Homme qui marche (‘Walking Man’), Le Chien (‘Dog’), Le Chat (‘Cat’). If some of Giacometti’s sculptures are known and acclaimed world-wide, his rarer paintings remain to be discovered. They will have an important place in the exhibition, in particular through the portraits of Aimé and Marguerite Maeght.
The rest of the exhibition will be made up of more than 80 drawings, extremely rare ‘plâtres peints’, etchings and letters. Some works from his early and surrealist periods will be shown but the exhibition will focus on the post-war period with its slender, filiform sculptures.
All the works have been lent by the large national and international museums or by private collectors and some will be on public display for the first time.
The Fondation Maeght will also pay homage to the man himself. Alberto Giacometti and Aimé Maeght were united by twenty years of friendship, twenty years of collaboration, exchanges and shared views of the process of creation. Their intimacy is revealed in letters, photographs, films – some previously unpublished – and portraits, which shed new light on Alberto Giacometti.
Long planned and bringing together 170 major works, the exhibition will allow the visitor to discover Giacometti in depth. This retrospective will be the major artistic event of summer 2010.
