In 1979, he began creating thick paintings that would become his life’s work: conceptual sculptures made with an everyday object gradually covered with countless layers of gesso. The artist foresaw at first that the result of this process would be painting that would gradually take on volume, though without losing the initial shape of the object used. It turned out, however, that this gradual, but radical transformation often made it unrecognisable.
