The tour starts in Arles, one of the largest Roman ports in Ancient times, which earned it the name of “little Rome of Gaul”. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine, Apt-Luberon, Marseille, Martigues-Côte Bleue, Fréjus-Saint Raphaël, Antibes, Nice represent the main Roman sites and regional archaeological sites.
The exceptional discovery in the waters of the Rhone River in Arles in 2007 of a full-size bust of Caesar is at the origin of this new initiative. This archaeological discovery is considered to be the most important in the past fifty years in France.
Caesar’s determinant role in the conquest of the Provincia Romana here serves to highlight these ancient sites and treasures to draw the public’s attention. With over 30,000 known archaeological sites, from prehistoric to mediaeval times, the archaeological heritage is at the heart of the cultural wealth of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region.
