Villa Arson: 1970 – 2010
40 years off the beaten track

An enchanted haven... is the lasting impression that visitors have of the Villa Arson, a place which appears so timeless, so far from the urban rat race. A gem in terms of quirky architecture and snappy exhibitions. 2010, its 40th anniversary year, is a better time than ever to visit the Villa Arson!

The view from Nice
An encounter with Sacha Sosno

Sacha Sosno has made Nice his open air studio, an ever-changing canvas which he lovingly portrays frame by frame through artist’s eyes. Sacha Sosno strolls through the emblematic features of Nice. When 7 details form a whole, Nice is an enchanting delight.

The 18th century red brick villa in the background first captures your attention well before you have gone through the gate. Next are the ultra modern buildings, a blend of raw concrete and Nice pebbles. And, in the middle, a Mediterranean garden, with an atmosphere of a village square, with open air meeting, discussion places and labyrinthine lanes. A harmonious dialogue between architecture and landscape which each one wins unobtrusively. The eye slides along its terraces, stairs, patios, between shadow and light, before escaping towards the Baie des anges, the sea and sky. The Villa Arson is a Zen bubble on St Barthélémy hill, barely a few minutes from the hubbub of the city centre.

Contemporary avant-garde
Created in 1970, the Villa Arson is the offbeat toast of the artistic world. It is an eclectic venue: art school, media library, contemporary art exhibition centre and artists’ residence. The most assiduous visitors delight in its innovative selection, fearlessly surprising, disconcerting, even shocking. A range of events in 2010 provide an opportunity to (re)discover this place (see insert). If you do go and take a look around, remember the Villa Arson is best experienced by taking time to go round it and you allow yourself to get lost in its charms...
