The "Belle Epoque"
on the French Riviera

In 1888, Stephen Liégeard coined the name "Côte d’Azur" for the French Riviera, which then became the most prestigious and fashionable venue for the elites of the world, first in winter, then in summer.

The finest hours of the Belle Époque remain the witnesses to an art of living immortalized in the Riviera’s heritage.

It offers an amazing blend of styles and periods, fashions and ideas, fanciful and innovative, as well as remarkable personalities.

 French Riviera architectural styles
The architectural styles
Architectural symbols of the "Belle Epoque", palaces and palatial hotels evoking fantasy and luxury, the stuff of dreams, a real ode to pleasure. The seafronts - the Croisette in Cannes, Promenade des Anglais in Nice, Promenade du Soleil in Menton - have kept their line-up of palatial hotels. Their monumental façades decorated like wedding-cakes, the lobbies and receptions all reflect the intense high-society life-style for which they set the scene.

A small corner of Russia on the french riviera
A small corner of Russia
At the end of the 19th century, the Russian community was to transform a patch of the coast between Cannes and Menton into an "annex" of the Black Sea shore. Tsars, Empresses, Grand-Dukes, aristocrats and the intelligentsia wrote here a few dazzling pages in their history, from 1850/1860. Some testimonials still remain.
