An encounter with Sacha Sosno

Close your eyes and imagine the scene… On May 13 1960 five thousand hand-picked guests hurry to Biot for the opening of a museum entirely devoted to the work of one of the masters of modern art, Fernand Léger. Open your eyes, look at his works and they still look just as fresh today! Léger appears more modern than ever before. Powerful, efficient, his work is in the process of being (re)discovered and the timing couldn’t be better, coinciding with the museum’s recent face lift. His paintings, drawings, ceramics and bronzes are now sculpted by light in its new display spaces. A wealth of events will be taking place in 2010 to celebrate the anniversary in a manner befitting the great man himself (see insert).

A good introduction to Léger’s work
The collection takes us on a half century trip through the main stages of the artist’s work. It does not claim to be complete. Visitors can interpret it in they own way, as the mood takes them. Léger’s close-up art, his fragment aesthetic, highly personal cubism, culminates in his film "le ballet mécanique" (mechanical ballet) featuring a repetitive dynamic of images. In his "objets dans l'espace" (objects in space) period the artist plays with freeing the object from all support. His American years are also featured with his "Les cyclistes" (Cyclists) and "Les plongeurs" (Divers) series. His return to France was marked by his "Les constructeurs" (Builders) series... On leaving the venue, you’ll soon want to go back for more.
