Forts, Citadels & Castles
on the French Riviera

In addition to the Ligurian castellaras and perched villages with watchtowers, the coast was guarded by fortresses from the Middle Ages. 
From medieval castles to citadels and fortified towns, all structures that evolved considerably over time and have now become peaceful sites for wonderful cultural tours featuring the Riviera’s finest panoramas.

Forts on the 
French Riviera

Because of rising tension between France and Italy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a series of forts were built along high mountain ridges (Maginot line).

Offering breathtaking panoramas over mountain sites in the heart of the National Mercantour Park, two itineraries, Circuit de l’Authion and Route de l’Amitié, provide opportunities to explore the defensive structures crowning many strategic sites in our region.
